Aeroflot is building a new image

The Logo of Russian airline Aeroflot

Russian Airline Aeroflot has hired a new PR manager and is now trying to build up a new image. As "Der Spiegel" reports, the fleet will be painted blue, orange and silver, the crew will received new uniforms and the food will be improved (well - at least they will try). The campaign's budget is 30 Million USD.

The old logo, featuring hammer and sickle, will not be replaced however.

Mc Donald's new Advertising Strategy

German Newsmagazine "Der Spiegel" reports about Mc Donald's new advertising strategy.

"Die Zeiten, in denen wir Hunderte Millionen Dollar pro Jahr für TV-Werbung ausgegeben haben, sind vorbei", sagte Bill Lamar, US-Marketing-Boss von Mc Donald's auf einer Werbekonferenz in New Orleans.

According to Spiegel, total ad spending will be reduced greatly and shifted from classic to online advertising.

Update: A similar story to the one linked above exists also in English.

Viral, Subviral or an Error? A strange Ad for Puma.

This ad for Puma is making the rounds:

A photograph of a young woman in a short skirt, on her knees in front of a standing man; the picture is cropped at the woman's shoulders, so you can't see exactly what's going on, but you can see enough to make a good guess. Also, some creamy liquid seems to have dripped onto the woman's thigh. Both she and the man are wearing Puma sneakers. There's also a Puma bag in the foreground, and a Puma logo in the corner. The image looks like a Puma ad.

Nobody knows if it is real or a fake. According to Slate, which is running a longer article about the ad Puma (...) not only declared the ads fake, but sent out a "cease and desist" letter to various bloggers threatening legal action against anyone posting the "defamatory image." However there is some speculation that this is a "subviral" tactic of Puma to keep the buzz going. I am not conviced about that, but anyway: Puma is getting a lot of attention through this meme.

SARS-Mask Advertising

Steve Hall has a collection of rather fashionable SARS-Masks (found it via Heiko Hebig) and thinks that maybe they will be used as an advertising medium. Maybe retailers will give branded masks away for free? How would you like your mask?

Update: Yahoo has a Story about the SARS-mask-fashion and Lucian James has found a Louis Vuitton mask!

Subliminal Advertising

When surfing the headlines at lucjam.com a link titled "Chivas Regal and subliminal nudity" caught my eye. Chivas Regal is a wonderful very smooth Scotch Whisky, triple blended and... oh, sorry, I got carried away. I guess my trip to Scotland still has an impression on me...

Anyway: The article Sex, Crackers and Subliminal Ads in Adweek talks about an advertising campaign by Chivas Regal that uses subliminal advertising and goes into the history of subliminal messages in advertising. An interesting read.

UPS gets new look

UPS's old logo The new Logo of UPS

For the first time in 40 years, UPS changes its Corporate Design. The new look is accompanied by a USD 20 Million ad campaign, reports Adweek. It will take until 2009 until all the aircraft, trucks, uniforms, letterboxes etc. will be switched to the new design.

Is it a change for the better? Haiko Hebig (of whom I found the story) writes: "Then, an all time classic. Now, Playmobil style." What do you think?

What do you think about UPS's new Corporate Design?

I like the new look.
